In a world where companies are doing their part to be more sustainable, Keramikos & Thermalmate are working to put their best eco foot forward.
We started by introducing our increasingly popular Bio and Eco products. You may be thinking these are not recyclable because of their special properties, but we can assure you they are fully recyclable, giving you the best of both worlds! This is in addition to our Black Universal and Black Sports Bottles being manufactured from recycled virgin materials from our factory, here in the UK, reducing all plastic waste and allowing nothing to go to waste. The emissions of transportation are kept low as all our plastic products are made in the UK, and none of our plastic products are single use, and all are fully recyclable. We will continue to offer innovative products that remain highly efficient throughout their service life and support a sustainable energy supply and reduce waste in an industry that was once a major contributor to ‘Throw away products’.
As we continue to work with our recycling partners, our ceramics continue to be recycled too! Mugs that cannot be saved, like failed quality checks and overs, are sent off to be crushed up and turned into road construction materials. As for our plastics, they are sent off and turned into carpet underlay, which means most of our recycled products end up under your feet! As we continue to protect a socially responsible, sustainable and liveable environment, we hope to find ways to educate and help our customers recycle their used or unwanted products.
Our additional packaging has also changed with our sustainability in mind. Previously we used single use plastic bubble wrap for select boxes, we now pack them with recycled crumpled paper, which can then, after delivery, be recycled once more. We shall continue to use delivery services who strive to reduce their own carbon footprint so that the entire delivery chain and all processes will be firmly anchored in sustainable economics.
Over the past year we have begun to recover and harness the heat generated by our kilns and circulate the hot air through the factory and offices during the colder months. Our factory runs on renewable energy and last year our largest kiln was updated and now runs on renewable electricity as opposed to gas. The office windows have also been updated to further our energy efficiency and trap all that lovely heat. Where possible we will continue to use clean energy for all out facilities power and our entire value chain to minimize CO2 emissions.
As our company has grown, we have streamlined our production processes, keeping everything under one roof. This has eliminated the additional footprint created by transporting products between locations during production.
In our commitment to sustainability, we have also invested in research of more eco-friendly inks. Our latest tests focus on extending product lifespan with stronger, longer-lasting ink to reduce waste. Traditionally, our multi-colour screen printing requires UV curing between each colour’s application, followed by final heat treatment in a rotary kiln. With our new ink, the UV curing step will no longer be necessary, significantly reducing energy consumption and lowering our overall environmental impact.
As part of our broader sustainability efforts, Keramikos & Thermalmate will begin calculating our carbon footprint to measure emissions and identify key sources of CO2. This will allow us to implement targeted strategies to reduce our environmental impact. To support this initiative, we are partnering with Planet Mark, an organization dedicated to helping businesses improve sustainability. Through this collaboration, we aim to set measurable goals and make meaningful progress toward reducing our carbon footprint.
We are dedicated to environmental improvements that foster a sustainable future and lead to social and economic improvements in the community we do business. All our operations and business practices will be grounded in sustainability principles in the hopes that we can do our part in preserving the environment.
